The Resurrection - An erotic fantasy novel

Natasha turned back and looked Sonia over. When she noticed her persistence, the blue-eyed lass gave in. "Very well then. Let's see now. How do I best describe it?" She paused. "Hmm, yes ... it's a kind of warm, exciting, and erotic feeling. Warm when he presses his body onto mine, whispering all the naughty things he wants to do to me, and kissing me passionately long, hard and wet. The excitement builds when he fondles my yearning breasts and cupping them with his hands. Eroticism takes over as he uses his tongue like a sensual paintbrush to lick and suck my nipples as if he is hungry with desire.

"By now another type of feeling starts to creep in: the heat from between my legs. I spread them apart. I can feel my wetness flowing. I am so aroused that I will writhe in pleasure even by the slightest stimulation. He has conquered me and I surrender to him without conditions. He has smelled me, tasted me, licked me, sucked me, and now slowly and steadily, he penetrates me. I close my eyes and I feel our bodies becoming one. Then a feeling of immeasurable sensual gratification and ecstasy runs up and down my spine as I pull him deep inside of me ..."

It's so frigging hot here nowadays! At times like this, I wish I was back in Switzerland during winter. If you ask me whether I prefer winter or summer ... now, that's a silly question, isn't it?

Oh, snow, snow, snow, how I miss thee ... sigh!

I am a liquidator ...

I am a liquidator. I have been liquidating people ever since I knew how to hold a gun. It does not matter who my victims are - politicians, underworld big-shots, tycoons - as long as my asking price is met, I send them a one-way ticket to hell, no question asked. But I do not kill children; it is my religion. My clients call me "Mr. Clean", a satirical nickname actually - I am never a morally pure guy, not even by a long shot. Rather, I always do a clean kill: a direct shot to the victim's brain; no suffering and no mess to the other part of his body.

Come Travel With Me - Switzerland

The author in Lucern town, Switzerland

Apart from writing, I love travelling. And Switzerland heads my "top 10 countries to visit before I die" list. From its lush river valleys, rolling green hills, and its  glacial alpine passes, this beautiful country is truly a natural treasure.

On the morning of 21 November, 2013, our small group of 16 left KLIA. My heart was pounding with excitement - wow, I mean my childhood's dream of visiting Switzerland was finally realized! So what if I endured a tedious 15-hour journey? And so what if the airplane food was bleech? Everything would be forgiven and forgotten when we touched down at Frankfurt, our first stop in our 10-day tour.

We only entered Switzerland on the 4th day of our tour via one of its most picturesque areas, the Engadine Valley. This is where St. Moritz, Switzerland's original winter wonderland and the holiday resort for the rich and famous, is located.

However, we didn't visit the town's leading attractions - the Leaning Tower or the Heidi hut. Instead we spent a couple of memorable hours at the lakeside treating our eyes to the breath-taking sight of the pristine blue lakes and the endless rows of white mountains.

St. Moritz - Switzerland's original winter wonderland

There, I had a great time challenging my tour friends to a snowball competition (I lost), and tramping through the piles of snow that looked like the white waves of a white sea, playfully falling on my back and giggling myself silly as I did. I just love the snow and the crisp icy air. The people staying there may be thinking we are nuts playing in the freezing cold, the same thought we have of them when they bake themselves under the hot sun on our beaches!

To be continued ...

Sequel to Snow Phoenix and Me?

I have been toying with the idea of a sequel to Snow Phoenix and Me ever since some readers asked me what actually happened to Akecheta Lung at the end of the first story. Did he follow Snow Phoenix or what? Will there be a Snow Phoenix and Me 2?

Currently I am working on a horror tale. It's still in its infancy stage so I can pause at anytime and do a new one. But I don't know. Should I indulge myself once more with the tragic path that Akecheta is heading now? Or should I just let it be?

Well, you tell me - I am all ears!

The Star features Snow Phoenix and Me

In its Star 2 - Reading Room page today, The Star highly recommended Snow Phoenix and Me as one of the "fun read" books for "big kids".

The following is what the columnist Seto Kit Yan wrote:

"Set in glamorous 1913 Shanghai, this story is about star-crossed lovers Li Suet-foong and Akecheta Lung. She's an idealistic albeit sharp-tongued struggling artist and he's a criminal, a notorious gun for hire, yet their logic-defying attraction only deepens until they're in love. But they live in chaotic, lawless Shanghai and though Akecheta tries his best to protect Suet-foong, their time together is under dire threat."

This book is currently available in Popular (Malaysia), Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Kindle, and other major bookstores in the USA. Get a copy and enjoy!

Arthur Foo - Love ... the fuel for his writing

The author talks about his latest book Snow Phoenix and Me in the February 2015 issue of POPCLUB, the bestselling entertainment magazine in Malaysia. Text by Billy Boey. Photos by Gem Yen and Arthur Foo.

A series of circumstances caused Arthur Foo and I to meet for the very first time in an unlikeliest of places - the male washroom. We looked at each other and exchanged casual greetings before we headed towards one of the coffee tables to chat about his latest book Snow Phoenix and Me.

At the age of 58, Arthur exudes a youthful character and possesses a good sense of humor. Before we even started the interview, we chatted away as if we have met a long-lost friend. Our conversations were filled with random laughter over little tongue-in-cheek situations.

When asked how he started his writing journey, Arthur became silent and thoughtful. And then he said, "I did not choose the writing journey. Writing chose me."

How writing found him

It all started one fateful night 15 years ago, and Arthur was grieving his mother's death alone in his study, in front of his computer. His fingers started tapping on the keyboard.

"I was really sad at that time. I looked at the blank word document at the computer screen, and I just typed 'I miss my mother ...' a few times. Then my fingers took over. I just continued typing. Before I knew it, I have typed out a 2-page essay," Arthur shared.

"And you know what? I felt much better after that." That was when Arthur began to develop a love for writing. "It is very therapeutic for me."

Love is in his writings

Snow Phoenix and Me is Arthur's third book. It tells of a notorious gun-for-hire, Akecheta Lung, and an artist named Li Suet-foong who falls deeply in love with one another while venturing through the chaotic period of 1913 Shanghai. They began a new life and take their uncompromising devotion to the next level with no inkling that their time together is ending ... fast. According to Arthur, 'it is a story for those who are in love, were in love, or hope to be in love.'

"I believe that 'Love' is a genre most strong in catching the readers' emotions," said Arthur when asked on why his novels are mainly love stories. He treated 'Love' as a serious matter, and that he wanted to use this theme to reiterate that 'Love' is a beautiful thing and an important one at that too.

"Love is the most important thing in life. Once we learnt how to love, only then can we lead a good life. Hate is suffering especially with all the mistrust and contempt toward one another," explained Arthur. "To me, romance is the most powerful of all genres. It makes readers realize what love is." He stated that this can be seen when Akecheta Lung turned over a new leaf because of his love for Suet-foong. In the same way, it was how Arthur's love for his mother had set him a new journey to write.

"I will continue writing this genre because I find it most comforting to write it. It brings meanings to my writings."

His love for adventures

Snow Phoenix and Me too contains a mix of action-packed adventures, suspense and various moments that can tickle your funny bones. With a setting of a chaotic 1913 Shanghai, it was a period when killing was rampant and Akecheta Lung is somewhat a macho character where killing comes easy for him. With Arthur's constant desire for adventure and knowledge, he related to us his inner desire to be Akecheta Lung.

"I've always fantasized myself being a tall, dark and handsome character - something like Akecheta Lung. I imagined myself living in a period where danger lurks in every corner. Like in 1913 Shanghai, it is kill or to be killed. It is a period of the survival of the strongest," he said.

His love for adventure also saw him travelling frequently around the world, and it is through travelling that inspired the writing of his novel. "For example," he shared, "I went to Beijing during winter and when I was at the inner courts of the Forbidden City, I felt an eerie chill. It's as if the people of the past are still living there." It was then that Arthur became inspired and started to do some research on the history of China, and it became an inspiration for the setting of Snow Phoenix and Me.

On being a local writer

It's definitely not easy being an author in Malaysia especially with the lack of support in most aspects in the local writing scene. "One of the challenges we faced as a local author is that Malaysian readers prefer reading books by international authors," commented Arthur.

"Just mention J. K. Rowling or Dan Brown and most people will know ... perhaps even have read their books. Mention any local author's name and they'll probably give you a blank stare." Arthur further added that Asian writers are always seen as inferior toward the Western writers.

"Actually, there is no difference between Asian and Western writers. Each author's writing is based on their own style, understandings, and beliefs from their culture. It is a matter of perspective, and I do hope that Malaysian readers will open up to writings by local writers," said Arthur towards the end of the interview.

With that being said, Arthur hopes that the local people will support the local writing scene. He continued on by applauding POPULAR for taking the initiative to start the "POPULAR Supports Local Authors" campaign. He applauded the fact that POPULAR has seen the potential in the local writing scene and helped local authors by promoting their books in their bookstores.

"Thank you, POPULAR. I hope through this campaign, a lot more people will be aware and lend their support toward local authors."

"I want a divorce!" - excerpt from Snow Phoenix and Me

Dusk, a peachy dusk over shredded gray clouds and white creamy fields, had fallen when I eventually tottered back to the house like a drunkard. The sky was bejeweled with twinkling stars. From the west, a gust of wind, howling and icy, slapped my face. Yes, yes, slap me harder, please, I said to myself. I wanted the cold to numb my heartache.

The front door was opened by the ever-efficient Ah Lan as soon as I set foot on the porch. "Madam is waiting for you in the hall, Master," she said with a sniffle. Her eyes were red; she had been crying too. I guessed Suet-foong must have told her everything.

"All right, thank you," I replied, pretending to be unaware of her present emotional state.

"The cold outside has chilled you to the bone, Master," she said as she helped me remove my jacket. "Would you like a cup of hot cocoa?"

"Yeah, that would be nice," I smiled, rubbing my hands; I could hardly feel them.

Suet-foong, deep in thought, was sitting on the couch by the fireplace. Orange flames were dancing inside it and the sound of crackle could be heard from the burning woods. It was warm and cozy, just the right tonic to defrost my ice-hardened butt.

"Ake, we have to talk," said my wife when she noticed me entering the hall.

"Sure, Sugarplum," I replied as I sat beside her. It looked like the defrosting had to take a rain check.

Fortunately, Ah Lan brought my cocoa just in time. The hot, frothy goodness really hit the spot. While I was gulping the beverage down with utmost relish, I caught sight of Suet-foong's wedding ring on the coffee table.

Uh-oh.

"I think we should cut short our stay in Beijing and return to Shanghai before my condition gets worse," she said.

"Yes, of course, you decide what is best. I'll always support you."

My eyes were on the ring.

"After that, I want a divorce," she added.

I nearly choked on my cocoa. My eyes darted at her as I managed to splutter: "W ... What?"

"I want a divorce," she repeated.

Putting away my cup, I grabbed her by the shoulders. I think I might have manhandled her. "Hey, hey, what is this? We're together, we are happy. Why do you suddenly want us to go our separate ways? Furthermore, I've said to you long before never to mention this forbidden word - have you forgotten?"

"Don't be stupid, Ake," she said, looking at me. Her face was sad. "I'm dying. I'm only burdening you ..." She paused. "Go get yourself another better woman worthy of your love and affection."

I had long pooh-poohed the old saying that tells a true love is measured by the sacrifice one is willing to make, but when Suet-foong actually did it, I went pale and was shaken all over, just like a dry martini. All I could say was: "Are you frigging mad?"

The Power of Love - Excerpt from Snow Phoenix and Me

Father Clark Buckingham, the bespectacled, rotund Caucasian head priest of the church, could not believe his ears when we went to his office to announce our intention to him.

"You like me to do what?" he asked, adjusting his glasses to have a better look at Suet-foong and me. He was clad in a black cassock, his fading black hair flecked with gray, and in his bearded face a pair of blue eyes - they were wide. I think he was stunned.

"We'd like you to marry us," I repeated.

"I can't marry you two just like that," the fifty-something priest replied. "There are procedures to be followed. Besides, are you Christians?"

"No, we're human beings," said Suet-foong matter-of-factly.

Father Buckingham smiled. "Yes, I can see that."

"Love is above religion and race, Father, and we are deeply in love," I declared. "We came here because we want our lifelong commitment to each other to be officiated by someone who has the authority to perform the sacred wedding rites: you. Kindly spare us a few minutes of your precious time, we shall be forever profoundly grateful."

Will Father Buckingham agree to the lovers' request to marry them? Read all about it in Chapter 9 of "Snow Phoenix and Me", available now in Amazon.com and Kindle!

Snow Phoenix and Me - up close and personal with the author

The first thing I felt when I completed Snow Phoenix and Me was a sense of self-satisfaction. I have always wanted to read a great love story, but I have yet to find that book or it has not been written yet. So I did the next best thing: I wrote one myself.

Admittedly, writing a good romance tale is not easy. I mean, it usually has the same scenario: boy meets girl, there is a sparkle between them, and they go through the ups and downs of their courtship before they finally live happily ever after - same old boring stuff. To me, that's not a real love story.

When I wrote Snow Phoenix and Me, I wanted you, the reader, to connect with the characters of Snow Phoenix and Akecheta (the two lovers) so that you not only read about their love, you would also feel it, want it, and be devastated when things don't turn out right for them in the end.

Snow Phoenix and Akecheta were created out of my fascination with a few film characters. For instance, Snow Phoenix, a sharp-tongued struggling artist, was inspired by the characters of Marion (Raiders of the Lost Ark) who is feisty and independent, and Rose (Titanic) who is smart and brave. On the other hand, when it comes to Akecheta who is a notorious gun-for-hire, think of the coolness of Steve McQueen (Bullitt), the ruthlessness of Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry), and the charms of Paul Newman (Butch Cassidy). Put the two lovers together in old Shanghai when chaos and lawlessness reigned, and you will have one hell of a great love story!

I chose 1913 in Shanghai as the setting for my story as that turbulent era somehow exudes a sense of great adventure and romanticism in me. You see, one winter afternoon many years ago, I was in the Forbidden City in Beijing, the world's biggest palace. Inside one of the many huge courtyards, there was a couple of dilapidated buildings - the centuries had certainly taken their toll - but age and dust only added to its charm. Under fresh snow, when the high chili red walls were tempered by drifts of glittering white, and sunshine fell on dusty shafts on the near deserted square, the palace looked so remote, so timeless. As I moved from one gate to another, passing through the narrow corridor lanes, I could not help feeling spirits of the past tailing after us. Wraiths were moving quietly across the pavement in satin shod feet. And voices murmured in the shadows. Did something of those astral presences stay behind from the ceaseless procession of concubines, eunuchs, and maidservants who, during the imperial days, were always going back and forth in the palace? Just thinking about it made my hair at the back of my neck stood up, yet in the same breath, I was thrilled beyond words! It was this place which gave me the inspiration to write a historical love novel!

I would like to think Snow Phoenix and Me as one of the best romance tales in town because it is unique. You will remember Snow Phoenix and Me for its many defining chapters, just like you will remember the movie, Titanic, for its defining moments (eg. the "You jump, I jump" scene). This alone is what going to make Snow Phoenix and Me stands out from the rest of the heap.

Give it a shot. Read it and tell me what you think. It is available now in Amazon.com and Kindle.

A tale of two star-crossed lovers in old Shanghai when chaos and lawlessness reigned supreme. Hilarious, touching, and filled with wonder - a perfect tonic for those who are falling in love, were in love, or hope to be in love.

Available now in Amazon.com and Kindle.

Read the following excerpt and let it tickle your funny bone:

I must have looked terrible because when I entered the living hall, I saw her sitting on the easy chair and looking at me in astonishment. "Oh, great Buddha!" she cried.

"Not even close; guess again," I replied in a bantering tone.

"What happened? You look like death warmed over!" she said, rushing to my side. I put the saddlebags on the sofa and we hugged each other.

"I haven't slept for the past forty-eight hours," I answered. Then as if on cue, I yawned.

"That's because you are in love with me."

I was baffled. "What has it got to do with me not sleeping?"

"Well, for the first time in your life, you have found something more beautiful than your dreams."

"That's all very fine, but if I don't get some shuteye soon, my grotesque appearance is going to give you nightmares!"

I then told her all about my vengeance on the five gunmen who had killed my sifu and his faithful dog. I could tell that she was enthralled by my tale - she did not open her mouth to make a witty remark like she usually did whenever I spurn a yarn.

"You fried all of them?" she asked at last.

"To a crisp."

"That's horrible."

"You mean about the way I liquidated those bozos?"

"No, I mean your cooking."
